In Partnership With La Roche-Posay.
Pigmentation is a passion topic of mine.
I deal with it myself, I treat it every day in clinic and I know that minimising pigment concerns like uneven skin tone and dark spots are constant battles.
Plus, in news that will surprise no one, Aussies love the sun.
So pigmentation concerns are actually quite common in Australia and even though most of us have the mantra 'slip, slop, slap' baked into our DNA it doesn’t necessarily mean we follow suit.
The bad news?
Our love of the sun also means that we have some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. So sun protection? And managing pigmentation?  Is yes, about keeping our complexions bright and even but it’s also about safeguarding our skin's health.

What Is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation is darkening of the skin caused by excess melanin production.
The most common cause of pigmentation is UV exposure, but skin injuries, hormones, and certain medications can cause pigmentation as well.
However, if you are dealing with pigmentation the first thing you need to do is figure out what type of pigmentation you have.
Secondly, look at treating it using a multipronged approach.
Sun protection is always going to be the first step. Meaning you need to be wearing an SPF every single day and actively staying out of the sun.
Why? Because sun exposure triggers excess melanin production, which can worsen uneven skin tone and dark spots.
Sunscreen (SPF 30+ or higher thanks for asking) helps block UV rays, in turn, reducing melanin stimulation and keeping your pigmentation in check.
For this reason the new Mela B3 serum paired with an SPF like the La Roche-Posay Anthelios sunscreen (which offers 50+ protection) is the perfect pigment-addressing duo!
In addition to this, your skincare routine and skin treatments should actively be managing your pigmentation as well.
Finding the right chemical exfoliant and retinoid for your skin is a must and a pigment blocking serum IMO is a non-negotiable.
Pigment blocking serums contain (you guessed it) pigment blocking ingredients designed to put a halt on the party your pigment producing cells like to have.
Enter: La Roche-Posay’s latest innovation...

What Is La Roche-Posay Mela B3 Niacinamide Serum for Dark Spots?

What:
If you’ve tried La Roche-Posay's cult niacinamide serum, think of this as its new, bigger, stronger sister with added pigment blocking benefits.
It’s designed to:
  • Visibly reduce dark spots, post acne marks and hyperpigmentation.
  • Contains an innovative patented ingredient Melasyl™ that has been clinical proven to manage pigment and dark spots before they appear.
  • Formulated with 10% niacinamide to target multiple pigment pathways.
  • Provides soothing and hydrating benefits alongside the pigment blockers.
  • Mela B3 Dark Spot Serum With Melasyl™ + Niacinamide contains LHA, a very gentle chemical exfoliant that can increase cellular turnover.
  • Pro-retinol improves overall skin tone.
  • Suitable for drier, more sensitive skins; and is fast absorbing and non-sticky.
Quick refresher: Why is niacinamide a beneficial ingredient for pigmentation?
Niacinamide tackles pigmentation in two ways: it regulates melanin production by slowing down the transfer of pigment to skin cells, and it strengthens the skin barrier, which helps prevent further sun damage that can worsen pigmentation.
This double action helps lighten existing dark spots and prevent new ones from forming.
Now onto my La Roche-Posay Mela B3 serum review!

La Roche-Posay Mela B3 Niacinamide Serum for Dark Spots Review.

If you love the La Roche-Posay niacinamide serum, and have pigment concerns you will love this.
It’s very similar in texture and feels very lightweight/non-sticky on the skin.
The chemical exfoliant in it, LHA, is very gentle too, so most skin types would have no issues using this twice a day for best results.
If you are more of a sensitive skin, I’d introduce slowly once a day or even every second day to see how your skin reacts.
I have been trialling it for a month now and can only speak to it on my short term results...
I manage my pigmentation religiously in clinic with chemical peels and lasers, which is an important piece of the puzzle - however I am never without a pigment blocking serum in my routine.
So firstly, I LOVE this for its budget friendly-ness and clinical studies to back up its claims. I am also a huge fan of how gentle, soothing and hydrating it is.
One of my biggest issues with pigment blockers normally are when they’re formulated with super strong exfoliants which makes them hard to incorporate into a routine for most skins consistently - but this one is so easy.
The texture is not sticky and sinks in quickly so it can easily be layered alongside other pigment tackling ingredients.
I’m also a fan of La Roche-Posay's new patented ingredient, Melasyl™which is a molecule that acts like a magnet to trap excess melanin (pigment) precursors before they transform into pigmentation.
And like I’ve said, when we have pigment as a skin concern, we always need to be actively trying to manage and prevent it from getting worse.
There is no overnight miracle cure - it’s just a constant day to day battle that includes sun protection, alongside the right active ingredients and treatments.

Final Verdict...

My skin has stayed even using this, I have had zero reactions and I feel so comfortable recommending this serum as a budget-friendly pigment blocker to try if pigmentation is a concern for you.
