Filters, fillers or just a great gloss? There’s more than one way to boost a pout these days.
Personally, I still love the quick fix of a topical lip plumper. They're non-committal, comparatively affordable and (depending on the formula) can span everything from a nourishing daily balm to a spicy, high-powered gloss.
You'll often find me with one (or six) in hand at any given time. Yes, I'm that person who doesn't feel complete until my lips are glazed, tingling and that little bit more pronounced.
So, in pursuit of achieving the most plumped pout possible, I've tested seven of the most-hyped formulas on the market right now. From the high-fashion sheen of Gucci Beauty to the TikTok-beloved burn of VT Cosmetics.
Some delivered subtle plumpness with nourishing benefits. Others? Full-scale spice. Here's how they measured up.

Gucci Beauty Gloss À Lèvres Plumping Lip Gloss

In true Fran-form, I had start with Gucci (it just felt right!!). I've actually been using this formula for years - I love layering it over my MAC lipsticks.
The luxe plumping gloss is formulated with menthol, ginger and cayenne pepper to boost lip volume, hyaluronic acid for moisture and their signature black rose oil to smooth fine lines. Gucci claims a 22% increase in lip volume and 43% hydration in user tests. Impressive.

On first swipe; it's buttery, luminous and very glam. The shine is mirror-like but not heavy and the tingle is gentle (and only lasts 20 minutes). It also reads a little more like a minty hot than a spicy hot.
After 10 minutes, there was modest swelling at the lip edge and lips looked more pillow-y. I opted for the tinted shade Bertha Pink, which gives lips a beautiful flush.
In my experience, Gucci is best when you want a luxe, wearable gloss that gives a soft lift and keeps lips smooth. I wouldn't say this formula gives me the most drastic results, but I do see an improvement and the overall finish is plump and juicy.
NYX Professional Makeup Duck Plump Lip Gloss

This drugstore beauty is both viral and volatile. Beloved by Cardi B, this pigmented plumping gloss touts “instant and overtime plumping” with a ginger root extract.
I found the texture of this one interesting. It's a slightly thicker, moussey gloss. It's very pigmented and lacquers onto lips nicely. The finish is sheeny and supple. As for the burn? She's POTENT.

The heat on this one was pretty notable, with intense stinging for 30 minutes and up to 2 hours of a slightly more manageable tingle. Silver lining, it was one of the longer lasting glosses. The colour and sheen lasted well into the evening.
I do think it flattered and gave some visible fullness but not without paying the price. I wasn't overly impressed with the volume it gave, relative to the burn. I would only reach for this on days I want drama and can tolerate the burn.
BARRY M That's Swell XXL Lip Plumping Gloss

This one surprised me. The scent was the first thing I noticed; sweet and a bit synthetic. Not my personal cup of tea, but I could see it as something others might enjoy. The texture is the real standout for me here. It's quite slick and reminiscent of a lip oil. It was lightweight and wore very comfortably on lips.
The tingling was far milder than I expected from something called “XXL.” A gradual warmth built over about five minutes. Nothing drastic. And honestly, neither were the results. Moderate tingling, moderate plump.
There was slight rounding at the edges and lift through the centre of my bottom lip, but not it wasn't what I'd e expecting from an XXL plumper.
Still, it’s not a total pass. The finish is dewy and it wears well for about 45 minutes before fading into a sheer, flattering sheen. I didn’t see major plumping over time, but lips stayed hydrated and smooth. I’d opt for this on days when I want something low-key and gloss-like
VT Cosmetics Reedle Shot Lip Plumper Expert

This one is not for the faint-lipped.
You may have seen this infamous K-Beauty “needle gloss”, on your TikTok fyp. It's viral - and with good reason. I haven't experienced a plumping formula quite as powerful and impressive before.
It uses something called micro-spicule technology (tiny silica needles, essentially) to create temporary channels in the lips, supposedly boosting absorption of its plumping ingredients. Wild, I know.

Within 30 seconds, the burn hit - sharp, hot, and intense. My lips flushed red and felt sensitive to the touch, like I’d just eaten something way too spicy. It was bordeline burn-your-lips-off pain, but.... the plump was real.
Especially in the centre, my lips looked noticeably fuller. The finish is ultra-glossy lacquer (almost wet-looking), For the first hour or so, it gave serious volume.
After that, things softened. The shine faded, and some of the swell settled down, but what stuck around was a smooth, slightly blurred texture that I really liked.
I wouldn’t wear this every day, but for a night out or a bold moment? It absolutely delivers. Just be ready for the intense heat.
Maybelline Lifter Plump - Plumping Lip Gloss

This one bridges cult gloss and plumper. The formula is dosed with hyaluronic acid, capsicum (chili) extract and Maxi‑Lip™ peptides to deliver both immediate heat and a plumping effect over time.
On the lips it's creamy, slick and sheeny. The pigment is pretty sheer (read: next-to-none) but it does look glassy and supple.
As for the plumping? The heat came up in waves, stronger in initial minutes, then mellowing. I felt light burning at the lip edges. The plump effect was subtle, though I did notice slight improvements to the upper outer edges.
In my experience, the effect lingered for maybe 1 to 1.5 hours before softening. After that, a sheer tint remained. This is a great middle ground: spicy enough to know it’s working, but not so extreme that it’s brutal.
MAKE UP FOR EVER Superboost Moisturising & Plumping Lip Gloss
This one leans more “boost + care” than pure burn. The brand frames it as a moisturizing & plumping hybrid, so expect something gentler. In wear: the tingle is mild. There’s a subtle warmth but nothing alarming. The gloss texture is plush and hydrating — it glides easily, with a cushiony feel rather than “slip.”
The fullness I saw was modest — a smoothing blur, a soft swelling especially in the centre zone. Not dramatic, but flattering. The shine holds well; I was impressed by its resilience over meals and talking — it lasted closer to 1.5–2 hours before fading to a sheer stain. After it recedes, lips felt moisturized rather than dry, which is a win.
In context: I see this kind of formula getting more love in “plump that cares” regimes — for people who don’t want daily irritation. It’s not headline‑grabbing, but affable. If you’re wary of burn but still want gloss with dimension, this is a dependable pick.
