Have you heard the news? Scalp care is the new hair care.
Why? Because the scalp is just an extension of our skin, but we seldom give it the same level of attention as we do the rest of our body.
Just like our skin, our scalp has a microbiome that acts as a first line of defence, shielding our hair from infection, toxins, irritation and damage.Much like how our skin barrier protects our skin.
When our scalp is impaired, you’re likely to see irritation, dandruff, itchiness, sensitivity or excess oil build-up creep in. You may even notice your hair has stopped growing.
Sound familiar? Well, luckily, most of these concerns are repairable, or at the very least controllable, with the right products.
Cue:
L'Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Scalp Advanced, the new hair care range specifically formulated to regulate scalp health.
The collection consists of three shampoos, each aimed at addressing a common hair concern. There’s one for dandruff, one for sensitivity and one for excess oil.
Being a ~delicate~ girlie, I opted for the sensitive shampoo aka the Scalp Advanced Anti-Discomfort Shampoo.
Below, you’ll find my review alongside all the juicy deets for the new reset range.
1. L'Oreal Professionnel Serie Expert Scalp Advanced Anti-Discomfort Shampoo.

Fast facts:
L’Oreal Professionnel Scalp Advanced Anti-Discomfort is a lightweight, gel shampoo to soothe and cleanse sensitive, irritated scalps experiencing discomfort.
It’s enriched with niacinamide (aka vitamin B3) to keep hair hydrated and reduce flakiness, leaving it shinier, smoother and more manageable.
It combines dermatological technology with hair care to promote a healthy scalp environment and restore balance to your hair.
It’s free from sulphates, silicones and alcohol.
My L’Oreal Professionnel Scalp Advanced Anti-Discomfort Shampoo review:
Before I dive into my review, let me get you up to speed on my scalp.
Like me, my scalp is easily irritated. Factors like stress, tension headaches, tight hairstyles (tick, tick and tick), as well as some hair care ingredients can cause sensitivity, resulting in an itchy, red or sore scalp.
What I love about the L’Oreal Anti-Discomfort Shampoo is that you get a deep, clarifying clean without leaving your hair bone-dry.
It has a clear, gel-like consistency and subtle herbal smell that lathers easily and feels soothing on the scalp.
Even after two shampoos, my hair still feels hydrated and healthy. It's much easier to work with while blow-drying, too.
Once dry, my hair feels soft and strong, and has a healthy shine to it. It also stayed this way for three. whole. days. (Which, btw, is a big win for me!)
Adding this to my regular hair cycling routine.
2. L'Oreal Professionnel Serie Expert Scalp Advanced Anti-Oiliness Shampoo.
Fast facts:
L'Oreal Professionnel Scalp Advanced Anti-Oiliness is a clarifying shampoo specifically formulated to target oiliness at its source.
It’s concentrated with 3% AHA water-soluble acid to purify the scalp surface and encourage hair growth.
Its lightweight formula leaves hair feeling clean and refreshed, without feeling too heavy.
It’s dermatologically tested and free from sulphates, silicones and alcohol.
This review from the L’Oreal Professionnel website says it all:
“My hair is very long and thin/flat, dry ends but oily scalp prone to build-up. I also go to the gym three times a week, so my hair gets really greasy/oily from all of the sweat and heat and being put in a bun for exercise.
This shampoo has a gel-like consistency and a very pleasant (for me) fresh/herbal fragrance. It applies and lathers up well.
I only put shampoo on my scalp and gently massage it. I didn’t experience any discomfort or tingling while using this product.
I always follow this with a great dollop of conditioner for my ends and hair oil.
Scalp feels great after a wash, clean and fresh with no irritation. As it is quite a specific targeting shampoo, I only use it once a week to clarify my scalp from a week’s build-up.
I will definitely repurchase this product” - Jules.
3. L'Oreal Professionnel Serie Expert Scalp Advanced Anti-Dandruff Shampoo.
Fast facts:
L'Oreal Professionnel Scalp Advanced Anti-Dandruff is a shampoo designed to eliminate dandruff from the scalp, gently clarify and remove excess oil.
It’s formulated with piroctone olamine, a key anti-fungal and anti-dandruff ingredient that targets the root cause of dandruff, itchiness and scalp irritation.
It provides instant relief from the itchiness caused by dandruff and visibly reduces the appearance of dandruff flaking.
It also nourishes and hydrates your hair, leaving it feeling soft, smooth and healthy.
It’s suitable for all hair types, plus sulphate and alcohol-free.
Here's our Head of Brands & Campaign Marketing's review:
“I’m one of the lucky ones to be blessed with dandruff from product build-up and dermatitis, and have tried pretty much everything there is to help it.
Shampoos can be really hit-and-miss. Some cause me irritation, some have that squeaky sound after and some require more than a double cleanse.
The L’Oreal Professionnel Scalp Advanced Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is excellent value for money, especially when you consider that it’s specialised.
It has a good texture that’s not as stripping as I expected - lots of anti-dandruff shampoos can be rather drying.
It lathers well and leaves my hair feeling really clean.
Surprisingly, it didn’t feel cooling on my scalp but I did find rather good relief after using the shampoo and that it helped calm itchiness. Which is exactly what I need in an anti-dandruff shampoo.” - Gerard.
Final Verdict...
As far as specifically formulated scalp shampoos go, this range is definitely up there.
Its solution-based approach makes it easy to determine which product is right for you, and the price point lands on the more affordable end of the active ingredients hair care scale, making it a no-brainer for sensitive scalps, those experiencing dandruff or people battling excess oil.
So next time you’re washing your hair, spare a thought for your poor scalp. It's the real MVP, after all.
