I'm Too Lazy For Pilates, But I Also Don't Want To Wet Myself

Liz O'Brien

Liz works in the Brands team, writing copy and managing product pages for all things cosmeceutical. But she's worked in the beauty industry across Australia and the U.K for just shy of a decade. Liz reads skincare ingredients lists like most people read trashy magazines (voraciously, and taking things far too personally) and considers niacinamide the third member of her marriage.
Let's be honest, I was never taking Pilates classes in the first place. The thing is, I’m lazy AF. Buuuuut, hurtling towards 30 and the idea of having kids, I just can’t face a future where wetting myself on a daily basis is considered normal. I simply don’t have enough underwear for that.
All power to ya if you’re doing that and still loving life, but if there’s even a small part of you that thinks “MAN I wish I wasn’t weeing like an incontinent puppy” then read on, friend.
When the LELO Beads were poked onto my desk with a sly grin and a wink from our Senior Category Manager, I knew these modern kegel balls were for me.

What Are Kegel Balls Used For?

Kegel balls aka Ben Wa balls aka Venus Balls aka Pleasure Beads, the LELO Beads are aimed at strengthening your pelvic floor.
  • LELO Beads work to strengthen the vagina, especially post-childbirth
  • They help to minimise urinary incontinence
  • They may also increase the intensity of orgasms
Hang on. Back a step. Do kegel balls feel good? Listen, they don’t feel bad.
For them to work, you need to be moving around - so this is less a “sitting in front of the TV” kind of exercise (bummer, dude) and more a “was already going to walk about for the weekly shop” kind of situation.
When you move, the weights within the kegel balls kind of....shift around. Inside you. It’s a strange feeling, but there’s also something KINDA sexy about it, or that was my experience. I’ll just say that people do use these as foreplay, and LELO does have a Fifty Shades of Grey inspired pair. What you do with that information is your business.
As a counter, a colleague wore these to yoga and didn’t report anything sexy about this, probably because she’s a better human than I am who actually HAS a “yoga practice”. So now I’m lazy AND deviant.

Are LELO Beads Difficult To Insert & Remove?

No, not really. If you’ve worn a tampon in your life, you’ll be fine. If you’ve used a period cup, this will be a total doddle. I’m a woman married to another woman, so having balls inside me was somewhat daunting, and I found it a piece of cake.
If you’re finding it troublesome, take yourself to bed - lie down, relax, hit it with a tiny squirt of lube and she’ll be apples. Whether you’re inserting a single ball or the girdle, ensure the string is hanging outside of your vagina.
When it comes to removing them, give them a gentle pull via the string loop - just like you would remove a tampon.

How Do I Know Which Size & Weight To Go For?

LELO Beads come in a Mini Size, and a Classic Size. The Mini is great for women under 30, and the Classic for women over 30 or who have carried a child. This isn’t about whether you’ve given birth vaginally, but as we age or carry children, our pelvic floor weakens.
They also come with four balls total and a girdle. The pink balls are lighter at 28g and the blue balls are heavier at 37g.
Treat them just like you’d treat weights at the gym - start slow with a single ball in the lighter weight, then try a single heavier weight, then two lighter weights in the girdle, then one of each weight. Aim for thirty minutes a day (longer is fine too!) but build up to this if it’s too much at first.

Most Importantly, Have I Noticed A Difference?

Technically, you need to use these regularly for 12 weeks to see results - but I do think I’ve noticed a positive difference, both inside and outside the bedroom. Put it this way - my local Pilates class won’t be seeing me anytime soon. But don't take my word for it, see some of the reviews of LELO Beads below:

'Great in strengthening your pelvic muscles! The result is totally amazing! Totally recommended even for postpartum rehab. You can tell the muscles are so much more "back in place".' ★★★★★ - Jenn

Wonderful!

My boyfriend and I tried these out about a month ago and they were amazing! We tried them coupled with the Tor 2 and were both mind blown. I wear them when I go for a jog and they definitely motivate me to run longer. I love my Luna Beads! Definitely recommend.
