What's the difference between the old SkinCeuticals hyaluronic acid formula and this new SkinCeuticals hyaluronic acid?
Firstly, if you have tried the original formula, this one does feel slightly different. Less sticky, a little lighter, but with just as much, (or dare I say even more?) hydration than before.
However, the main updates to this new serum are these ingredients below:
- Proxylane™: The concentration has been increased from 10% to 12% in the updated formula, meaning it can offer enhanced support for skin firmness.
- Purple Rice Extract: This ingredient has been replaced by Lactobacillus/Soybean Ferment Extract in the new formula which helps to soothe the skin and support the microbiome.
- Lactobacillus/Soybean Ferment Extract (2.0%): this ingredient has been updated in the new formula as a post-biotic ferment to increase glycosaminoglycans, which are essential for maintaining skin moisture.

The age old question that pops up in clinic time and time again, do you need a hydrating serum in your routine
Well, maybe, but not always.
Here’s the thing: a hyaluronic acid serum benefits anyone looking to boost skin hydration, plump fine lines, and improve overall skin texture, but this means it’s going to be most beneficial for dry, dehydrated and ageing skin.
And while oily and acne-prone skin types can also benefit it is not a must for these types of skins.
However, if you are sensitive you will love this serum for its soothing and plumping effects.
My review of SkinCeuticals H.A Intensifier Multi Glycan:
I personally think this updated formula is much more elegant and soothing than the previous version, which on my combination skin, did tend to feel a lot thicker.
And while a hydrating serum is not a mainstay in my everyday routine, it is a product I love to rotate into my routine through the cooler months (which are coming!) alongside post clinical treatments to help give back to my skin after a laser or a peel.
Which means, this is a product that ticks all the boxes if your barrier is impaired/sensitised or needs a little extra hydration.
As a dermal clinician I love reminding people to listen to their skin, when thinking about introducing new products.
However, the new Skinceuticals hyaluronic acid formula is not a product that should be hard to integrate into any routine, it works with all ingredients and if glowy, plumpy skin is your goal then your skin might just have met its match with Skinceuticals reformulated HA Intensifier.
