I actually think toners might be one of the most misunderstood skincare products in the beauty space.
Mainly because so many of us grew up using toners that were
drying and skin-stripping, and somehow
that made us feel like they were working.
However, toners and the category in itself has changed over the years dramatically. And maybe we can thank
K-beauty (Korean beauty) for that.
You see, I do think when most people hear the word “toner” they think of a product designed to remove oil. However, when K-beauty brands say "toner," they're often talking about a layering product that will provide hydration, barrier support and help the skin hold onto water. Which is so important for our skin (and actually the complete opposite of any old-school toner that comes to mind.)
What Does Toner Do for Skin?

Is a toner actually necessary? Is it okay to use toner everyday?
You see, one of the reasons Korean skincare has become so popular is because it was one of the first categories to really embrace the idea of barrier health.
Meaning rather than stripping the skin, many K-beauty products are designed to replenish hydration after cleansing and create a comfortable environment for the rest of your skincare routine.
And that’s where k-beauty toners shine. Plus, it’s hard to find a Korean routine without one as many, use toners (and essences) on their skin, before their serums and moisturisers to help replenish water and give skin a healthy glow.
But do you actually need one? Well, not necessarily.
As a dermal clinician I know, not everyone needs a toner. So if you've got a simple routine that you're happy with, you don't need to rush out and buy one.
Buuut if your skin often feels tight after cleansing, you're using actives and need products in your routine to help balance out your skin (ie. add more hydration to balance out exfoliation), or you're dealing with dehydration? A K-beauty toner could be one of those products that can make your skin feel a lot happier.
So which ones are worth trying? Let me give you a rundown of my favourites below.

I love this toner so much. It’s milky and nourishing but not heavy so it can be beneficial if you’re slightly more dehydrated and oily rather than dehydrated and dry.
It’s also packed with ceramides, which supports and strengthens the skin barrier.
Laneige Cream Skin Cerapeptide™ Toner & Moisturizer reviews:
"This product is gorgeous. Lightweight but thicker than other 'milky toners' and has the hydrating aspect also. I often apply two layers and my skin feels more hydrated and nourished than a full face of skincare. Love love love. AND love that you can purchase a refill bag and save on the plastic packaging. Perfection." - AB customer Jorji.
"I've bought this multiple times! I have normal skin with occasional break outs and this is so soft and nourishing! It makes my skin feel hydrated and doesn't break me out." - AB customer Em.

This is a nice K-beauty toner to try if you want to both brighten and hydrate the skin.
It’s not necessarily exfoliating, but it does contain rice extracts that can help improve skin tone and texture alongside niacinamide, which can also contribute to brighter-looking skin.
This would be a nice toner for sensitive skin, too.
I'm From Rice Toner reviews:
"My skin feels calmer the moment this toner touches it, like it's finally exhaling. The texture is light but deeply comforting, and it reduces redness without that tight, stripped feeling I hate." - AB customer Marisa.
"From the first few uses, this milky toner made my skin feel cushioned and calm, especially after washing when my face usually feels tight and impatient. It leaves a soft, hydrated finish without any heaviness." - AB customer Lora.

This toner will be nice for all of those people who like products that sit somewhere between a toner and a serum, because this is exactly that.
It contains ginseng extract and humectants to support hydration while giving skin that healthy, well-rested glow K-beauty is famous for.
BEAUTY OF JOSEON Ginseng Essence Water reviews:
"What I noticed most with this essence was how it quietly improved my skin's texture over time. Makeup started sitting smoother and my face felt more resilient, not just temporarily plumped." AB customer.
"What drew me in was the silky texture of this essence as it sinks into the skin. My face feels immediately more balanced, and over time it looks clearer and quietly more resilient." - Maria.

Ok so while this product sits more in the essence category, it can still be used between cleansing and serums /moisturisers.
It’s probably the one I would go for if you had sensitivity or barrier impairment issues. However, I’d tread with caution if you have oily/acne-prone skin.
COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence reviews:
"Great product for sensitive, rosacea-prone skin.On my 3rd bottle." - AB customer Sagz
"Was skeptical about snail mucin, but this essence has transformed my skin. It's lightweight, absorbs quickly, and leaves my face feeling plump and moisturised." - AB customer Pia.
If you've written toners off based on traumatic memories from the early 2000s, I don't blame you.
However, modern Korean toners are a completely different category.
They're not about stripping your barrier or chasing that squeaky clean feeling. They're about hydration, barrier support and helping the skin function at its best.
So if your skin is feeling slightly parched, dehydrated or in need of a big drink, then they might be worth looking into.
