I remember the first time I wore winged eyeliner like it was yesterday.
It wasn't - it was in high school, after spending endless hours scouring the internet for videos and tutorial and following them step by step.
But of course, all eye shapes are different.
What I didn't know was the technique that worked well in the videos wouldn't necessarily work for me and my hooded eye shape.
I recall sitting down in front of the mirror to draw my first winged eyeliner for real.
I held my breath as my sweaty little fingers gripped the handle of the stolen liquid liner from mum’s beauty stash.
It took me 20 minutes to draw on my first ever winged eyeliner.
Now, I wear winged eyeliner almost every single day, and I could probably do it in less than 30 seconds.
Hold the applause, please.
I love the way a nice, solid liner darkens my lash line, makes my brown eyes pop (and look awake!) and opens up my natural eye shape.
But eyeliner for hooded eyes is a skill, and it took me a while to master my fool-proof winged eyeliner for hooded eyes method.
Want to know how to do eyeliner on hooded eyes? Come with me.
Stick around and I will show you exactly how I do my signature eyeliner look, including the best products and winged eyeliner tips for hooded eyes.

Best Eyeliner for Hooded Eyes.

There are so many types of eyeliners out there - gel, liquid, felt, pencil and powder.
You'll have to trial a few to find the easiest formula that suits your skin best, but I personally LOVE and highly recommend felt tip liners.
They're the best eyeliner for hooded (and oily) eyes, and they're so easy to use.
It's like using a texta, for your eyeballs.
Plus, a felt winged eyeliner pen will give a pigmented, incredibly long-wearing line with a semi-matte finish.
Since falling in love with a felt tip eyeliner - Maybelline Hypersharp Wing Liquid Liner to be specific - I've never looked back.
As the name suggests, the tip is hyper sharp.
It's neither too matte nor too shiny on my skin.
It is just perfection. Oh, and did I mention it's only $17.95?!
L'oreal Paris Superliner Flash Cat Eyeliner - Black is another great option under $30.
The long-lasting waterproof eyeliner features a beginner-friendly wing stencil for perfect eyeliner, every time.
On the bougie end, you can’t go wrong with Benefit Roller Liner - a cult product for a reason!
The matte liquid eyeliner comes in black and a very on-trend brown if you’ve been wanting to give brown eyeliner a try. The felt tip is super sharp and glides over the lid smoothly, no dragging.

How to Do Eyeliner on Hooded Eyes.

OK, so now comes the part where I take you through how to do the perfect winged eyeliner on hooded eyelids.
You can watch my Youtube video below for a visual reference, or keep reading for all the details!

Step 1: Prime your eyelids. Trust me.
If you have oily eyelids, this step is essential to prevent an unwanted smokey eye.
M.A.C Cosmetics Pro Longwear Paint Pot works a treat and also doubles as an eyeshadow!
Step 2: Next, set your primer with a translucent powder to make sure everything is locked in and won’t budge throughout the day.
RCMA No Colour Powder 3oz is a cult product that also happens to be a bargain.
Step 3: With a slow and light hand, mark out the line you want to create by drawing little dashes with your liner.
When you are happy with the way it's looking, connect the dashes with a heavier hand. Stop when you have reached the outer third of your eyelids.
Hot tip: Have a mirror at a 45 degree angle to your face while doing this. When you look down at the mirror, you will be able to see more of your lash line and eyelid.
Step 4: This is where you want to start your wing.
Follow the shape of your bottom water line up and draw out a thin, short line. Create a small triangle by connecting the line you just drew, back to the liner on your lash line.
Hot tip: Remember to constantly check straight on to ensure you are happy with the thickness and the way the line looks on your eyes.
Step 5: Fill in the small triangle. There is your winged liner done and dusted.
Step 6: Take a step back to ensure your wings are even and fix where necessary. Voila!

Now for a few eyeliner for hooded lids words of wisdom:
  • For hooded lids, you really want to be cautious of how thick your liner is because this is what will either open up or close off the eye shape.
  • A good way to determine how thick your liner should be is to look straight at a mirror and take note of where your skin folds on your lids.
  • You don't want your liner to come too close to this area, as it may cause smudging and might actually make your eyes look too dark.
Remember that with eyeliner, it is easier to paint it on than it is to take off if you’ve gone too far (or too thick).
But don't stress. Micellar water and some cotton tips are an eraser for mistakes.
Finally, be sure not to rush this process.
Winged eyeliner is art, and art takes time.
