The MAKE UP FOR EVER Mascara That Gave My Lashes Volume, Lift, Curl & Definition

As a makeup artist and mascara lover, I have probably tried over 50 mascaras in my lifetime.
I am always on the hunt for the perfect formula and brush type, and when I find a winner, I will repurchase over and over again.
In search of my mascara Prince Charming(s), I’ve kissed a few toads.
A few of my mascara pet peeves and automatic no-nos include:
- Formulas that feel heavy and thick, and weigh down the lashes.
- Mascaras that are too ‘wet’ and take forever to dry down.
- Mascaras that are too dry, and have a flakey or cakey formula.
- Brushes or wands that don’t let me get right to the root of the lash and into that awkward inner eye area.
- Mascaras that smudge the second my skin radiates heat/sweat, and leave me with a grey ring below my eyes and underneath my brows.
- Mascaras that are so waterproof, not even a double oil cleanse and targeted remover will take them off.
Am I asking for too much? I don't think so.
So far, the best way I've found to get my desired fluffy but FULL and lifted mascara look is to almost ALWAYS use two different mascaras.
Buying two mascaras can be costly, but I'm committed.
I use the first mascara to coat, lift and elongate the lashes, and the second to add definition and volume.
Um... why not buy one of those two-in-one mascaras, you ask?
Well, in my experience, dual-formula mascaras or double-ended mascaras are a bit gimmicky.
So when a screwdriver-looking mascara (you'll get what I mean when you see it) with a different wand on either end landed in the office, I was sceptical, to say the least.
I have an unbeatable mascara duo going at the moment, so anything I’m trying would have to be REALLY good if it was going to come close to my usual routine.

Short version: This is a winner and definitely gets my tick of approval.
Let's break down why...
MAKE UP FOR EVER The Professionall Mascara -16ml pleasantly surprised me not only with the volume, lift AND curl I got, but also how the brand was able to combine two brush heads into one tool.
This mascara caters to anyone, whether you’re after a minimal makeup look or someone who loves a dramatic full-lash effect.
Or maybe you like the idea of both and want the flexibility to match your lash look to what you're doing that day.
Here's a selfie showing how the step 1 brush gives you that 'clean girl' look when worn on its own (right eye), and the fuller lash look step 2 delivers (left eye).
Aside from the two brush heads (have I mentioned them enough yet?!), the buildable, quick-drying formula stands out from others I've tried.
Even though it’s long-wearing, the removal process wasn’t too bad either. It definitely didn’t leave my eyes and lashes feeling raw or irritated.
In terms of smudging, I would say it holds up quite well.
When I haven’t powdered under my eyes, I experience the tiniest amount of smudging with this mascara, but only after about six hours of wear, which doesn't really bother me.
Personally, I think the magic of this mascara comes from using step 1 and step 2 together.

Hand on heart, I have not been able to get the lift, curl, definition and volume I achieved with this mascara from any other standalone mascara.
Pro tip: I like to apply a coat of mascara with the step 2 brush head about 30 seconds after the step 1 coat while the formula is neither fully wet nor fully dry.
I can usually only achieve this look by using two different mascaras, so I was IMPRESSED!
This doesn't happen very often, as I am a super harsh mascara critic.
