I usually experience a bit of
scalp flakiness during the change of seasons (or if I’ve been using too many different products).
As we move into colder weather here in Melbourne, my scalp was starting to play up a little bit, so when I had the opportunity to try
Aveda’s Pramasana purifying treatment in-salon, I jumped at the chance.
Unsure of exactly what this treatment would entail, I stepped into
Rhodes Hair & Spa expecting a standard hair treatment: a hair wash in the basin, a 10 minute treatment and a little scalp massage.
What I didn’t expect was a fully fledged spa experience.

What Happened In My Treatment?
In keeping with Ayurvedic principles that inspire the range,
Aveda believes treating the whole person leads to greater balance and well-being, which explains why I left
Rhodes Hair & Spa not only with a purified scalp, but feeling incredibly zen for a Monday morning.
Prior to starting the Pramasana treatment, Karly assessed the condition of my scalp using a microscopic camera (something completely foreign to me) – here’s my before and after below. As you can see, this treatment really cleared away a lot of that excess flakiness for a clearer, fresher scalp. Oh, did I mention you can do this treatment yourself at home? Minus the scalp camera, of course.

Step One: Exfoliating Scalp Brush
Karly began my treatment using the
Aveda Pramasana Exfoliating Scalp brush (which reminded me of those head scratchers that give you goosebumps). This brush is designed to help loosen build-up and impurities on the scalp in preparation for optimal cleansing.
Helps increase microcirculation to the scalp when used with massage
Specially designed looped bristles massage without tangling hair
You use circular motions just on the scalp, not to brush through the lengths
Very unique!
"I’ve never seen a brush like this before or knew that a scalp brush existed! But since I’ve been getting dandruff lately, I have been looking at products to help alleviate then issue. This seems to be one of a kind and pleas note the bristles are not like normal nylon pins... they goops around and are bouncy to the touch. It doesn’t fully fit thro...

Step Two: Purifying Scalp Cleanser
Next up is the Purifying Scalp Cleanser
Aveda Pramasana Purifying Scalp Cleanser 150ml – this is basically your ‘shampoo’ component of this treatment, except you apply it to
dry hair. Simply section your hair and apply the formula directly onto your scalp before thoroughly massaging in the product to create a light lather. It has a gentle cooling sensation, so it’s soothing on irritated scalps.
It deeply, yet gently cleanses & purifies the scalp to help balance sebum levels
Naturally-derived Salicylic Acid exfoliates & removing build-up
Features ingredients that help balance & protect the scalp’s natural barrier
Great hair Cleanser
"Aveda is really the best in hair products. This hair Cleanser is really good. It's removes build up and leaves the hair feeling amazing. My styling products work much better afterwards. Highly recommended. I have purchased many times."

Step Three: Protective Scalp Concentrate
After rinsing out the Purifying Scalp Cleanser, it’s sectioning time again. Using the same technique for the cleanser, apply the
Aveda Pramasana Protective Scalp Concentrate 75ml directly onto the scalp and softy massage it in. This is a leave-in treatment (and it leaves no feeling of residue behind).
Helps balance sebum levels of the scalp & roots
This lightweight treatment penetrates the scalp to preserve it’s natural barrier
Helps to protect the scalp from environmental aggressors
Just keep using it
"This product won't give you a fast result but it does the job it claimed to have. I can feel my scalp become healthier after using it for two months. Scalp care should be a new habit I believe."

My Verdict:
While I
thoroughly enjoyed my Pramasana treatment at
Rhodes Hair & Spa (probably the most relaxing experience of my life), this treatment is 100% doable at home – if you’ve got a tail comb and a mirror, you’re set.
For those of you with flaky, irritated or oily scalps, I highly recommend giving this treatment a go. I know this will be hard to believe, but I had the Pramasana treatment on a Monday, and didn’t need to wash my hair again until the Friday night!
Doing it yourself only takes about 20 minutes, so it won’t extend your usual hair-washing time – but it will give you a cleaner, flake-free scalp. I’m now using Aveda’s Pramasana products in between regular washes
