Every Single Product Our Beauty Editor Uses to Wash and Style Her Hair

If you've been an Adore Beauty customer/follower/reader for a while, you'll know I'm really passionate about skin care.

But recently, a few comments have come up around what I use to wash and style my hair (one person asked), so here we are.

A bit about my hair type: It's very flat.

I have a lot of hair, but I'd describe it as fine (which is different to thin hair). This means the actual hairs themselves are quite fine, so I struggle to get volume in my hair - even when it's professionally styled, the volume does not last.

Personally, I've kind of given up on volumising hair products, so I just stick to products I know will make my hair look really shiny and healthy.

Below, you'll find my complete haircare routine, from the best shampoos, masks and treatments, to the styling tools I don't do my hair without.

The shampoo I use is VIRTUE Recovery Shampoo 240ml - I was recommended this shampoo by colourist Jaye Edwards from Edwards and Co at the end of 2019 when I lightened my hair.

After using it, maybe, three times, I realised I was never going to use anything else ever again. This shampoo is the GOAT, especially if your hair is dry, colour-damaged or if you experience hair breakage.

I should also mention, I always do a double shampoo. Yes, that does mean you go through product faster, but your hair stays cleaner for longer (or at least, that's what I've found).

My favourite conditioner isn't actually a traditional conditioner. Instead, I use a moisturising mask.

Christophe Robin Hydrating Melting Mask with Aloe Vera smells like hot man, and is super nourishing and hydrating for dry hair. I only wash my hair once or twice a week, so I use this in place of conditioner rather than having a separate mask night.

Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt 250ml is the final product in my hair washing routine... but it's key to understand how to use it. Otherwise, you won't get the hype when you try it.

How to use the Christophe Robin scalp scrub: Scoop a 20 cent piece-sized amount out, rub it between your palms and put it through your hair. Then, briefly dip your hair back under the shower water before working the product in. That extra bit of water will help the product foam up so you can really get into your scalp.

I tend to give myself a bit of a scalp massage when I've got this in, it really helps to break down that build up of product that can happen if you use a lot of dry shampoo. Also great for those with oily scalps.

I use this once every few weeks as a first shampoo, and then follow up with my Virtue shampoo as the second shampoo.

I don't heat style my hair more than once a week - I think if you're heat styling every day, it's much harder to stay on top of hair health.

But when I do heat style, I always use Pureology Color Fanatic Multi-Tasking Leave-In Spray 200ml as my heat protectant/leave-in conditioner/hair detangler.

It has 21 essential benefits, so it truly is a multi-tasking hair hero. I apply this when my hair is damp; I have the knottiest hair in the history of the world and this helps me brush through it before blow drying.

I always dry my hair using the Dyson Supersonic Iron Fuchsia HD07 - I cannot leave my hair to air dry, ever, because otherwise, I just get that oily patch at the back of my head.

Another product I apply to damp hair is Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother Frizz Control Styling Hair Cream because it leaves hair really smooth.

But we also need to talk about K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask 50ml which you would have seen everywhere because we don't shut up about it.

It's a new product to Adore Beauty - a molecular repair mask designed for really colour-damaged hair - but I've seen a huge increase in shine since I started using this.

Once a month, I use Revlon Professional Nutri Color Filter - 931 Light Beige (it used to be called the nutri color cream) instead of a blonde shampoo because I find them a little too drying.

The packet says to leave it on for five minutes. I leave it in for 30 minutes. So yeah, I’m a risk taker. Sue me.

I don't use a heap of styling products because, as I said, I've kind of given up on getting volume in my hair. That said...

R+Co Spiritualized Dry Shampoo Mist changed my life. Aerosol dry shampoos make my hair really flat, and make it look dirtier than before. You dry this one in with your hair dryer (not the most convenient), but wow, it gives volume and makes the hair look fresh.

The next thing I need in my routine is a sea salt spray. At the moment, I'm using Balmain Paris Texturizing Salt Spray 200ml and I use it to slick my hair back into a sleek bun or ponytail. I prefer this over any other styling pomade or spray because I find it holds the hair, without making it stiff.

But the real key to that sleek look with zero bumps? A toothbrush. And the Christophe Robin Detangling Hair Brush because instead of separating the hair and giving it a combed look, it brings the hair together. I actually spray the toothbrush with sea salt spray and use that to smooth back any flyaways.

Let's finish off the hair styling section of this hair manifesto with a controversial opinion.

I really do love the Oribe Apres Beach Wave and Shine Spray … and I rate it over the 'cult' dry texture spray.

For my usual wavy style, I’ll use Silver Bullet Fastlane Large Ceramic Conical Curling Iron Gold - 19mm-32mm - it’s a 32 millimetre conical wand and crucially, it doesn’t have a clamp.

I hate clamps on curling wands, I used to remove them manually with a screwdriver. I prefer being able to wrap the hair around the wand.

Final words of advice: I’m definitely not a hair professional, but I’ve been using professional hair care for many years and it makes a difference.

But you don’t have to use products as bougie as mine. There are heaps of great affordable professional haircare brands with products under $35.

And that’s it. My really minimalist hair routine. Nothing major.
