Some scents are unmistakably summer – vine-ripened tomatoes at the market, herbs basking on a sunlit windowsill, freshly cut grass in the scorching sun and warm concrete after a sunshower.
These pockets of pleasure always evoke feelings of warmth and nostalgia, resurrecting memories of summers long gone; and fragrances often overlooked until the season rekindles them.
But what if these serendipitous scents didn't fade away with the arrival of autumn or vanish altogether?
What if you could relive them at your whim, with a simple spritz or flick of a match.
If the new trend in the world of fragrance is anything to go by, this olfactory oasis is now within reach.
Indeed, these moments of serenity have inspired the latest trend to take root in the fragrance: garden-inspired scents, but not as you’ve come to know them.
These aren’t the typical floral fragrances associated with the sunny season. No, sir.
We’re talking about rich, earthy scents handpicked from the humble home garden.
So, if you've been on the lookout for a distinctive scent for the new season, keep scrolling because I've found five that perfectly fit the bill.

1. Trudon Abd El Kader Candle.

Notes:
  • Head: Spearmint, lemon, black-currant bud, apple, ginger and clove.
  • Heart: Jasmine.
  • Base: Vanilla.
I have my colleague Megan to thank for introducing me to this herbaceous baby.
A fixture in her recently renovated home, she suggested it as the ideal centrepiece for a kitchen or communal area where a hit of basil is a welcomed addition.
For me, it was love at first sniff.
Quickly followed by intrigue, when a quick scan through the notes revealed an absence of any actual basil leaves. *Gasp!*
Nevertheless, its grounding fusion of blackcurrant bud, lemon, clove, ginger, mint, and apple top notes definitely orbits around the essence of basil.
So if pesto pasta is a beloved staple in your weekly menu or you’re looking for a refreshing scent that will subtly add to your home’s ambience, consider adding this aromatic candle to cart.

2. Jo Loves Green Orange & Coriander A Fragrance.

Notes:
  • Black pepper, bitter green orange and coriander seed.
Trust renowned storyteller through scent Jo Malone CBE to convert this coriander-hating writer to a fragrance that spotlights the polarising herb.
A mainstay in her eponymous mid-range Jo Loves line, this uplifting scent harmoniously blends bitter green citrus and culinary herbs to create a warm, comforting fragrance.
While slightly leaning towards a more masculine profile than anticipated, the fragrance opens with a sharp burst of citrus and gradually unfolds into a rich herbaceous aroma with a subtle spicy undertone.
That said, if unique scents tickle your senses, this one by Jo Loves is worthy of a closer look.

3. Aesop Eremia Eau de Parfum.

Notes:
  • Bergamot, yuzu, iris, cardamom, shiso, basil, mimosa and galbanum.
We already know and love Aesop’s body care collection (personally it’s the Resurrection Hand Balm for me), but flying under the radar is a pretty impressive fragrance line.
Now I’m going to go ahead and say it’s not for everyone. You won’t find any femme-coded florals here.
Just like the rest of the Aesop range, the scents are robust, earthy and full of life.
My pick of the crop is Eremia, a fragrance aptly described as “wet moss and wildflowers”.
It’s a clean and crisp scent with a mineral finish akin to concrete after rain.
Ideal for those after a formula that combines plant-based and high-quality efficacious lab-made ingredients, or a signature scent that stands out from the rest.

4. Carrière Frères Tomato Candle.

Notes:
  • Crafted from a single note of tomato made from 100% vegetable wax.
The idea of a tomato-scented candle may sound odd or better placed on your plate than your place. And I get it – it certainly wasn’t on my 2024 bingo card.
But then I got a whiff of this one by Carrière Frères, and it was an immediate add to cart.
It’s actually rather remarkable how they’ve managed to perfectly encapsulate the characteristics of a freshly picked homegrown tomato. From the earthy aroma of its green leaves to the sweet notes of the fruit itself.
Contrary to its distinct scent, the candle doesn't overwhelm your space with a super-strong sillage.
Instead, it offers a fresh and soft presence, making it an ideal addition to communal areas or your home office.

5. Creed Original Vetiver EDP.

Notes:
  • Head: Bitter orange, mandarin, bergamot and vetiver leaves.
  • Heart: Coriander, white pepper and inkberries.
  • Base: Vetiver, ambergris, Tonkin musk and Mysore sandalwood.
In three words, this fragrance is clean, green and classy.
The kind of scent you’d expect from a suave gentleman or that effortlessly cool girl you can’t help but obsess over her unconventional style.
Inspired by warm summers in the South of France, Original Vetiver is derived from both the leaves and roots of the rich plant, resulting in an earthy aroma that exudes warmth, sensuality, and unmistakable uniqueness.
So if a scent that captures the essence of the great outdoors sounds like a bit of you, I'd recommend checking this one out.
