With hundreds of 5-star reviews and a cult-like following, this legendary haircare product is God-tier in my eyes.
Once, those same eyes almost shed a tear when my partner told me he'd used my Christophe Robin scalp scrub as a 'lovely body scrub'.
I even hang onto the empty tubs, hoping they might magically refill themselves. (Spoiler: They don't.)
So when the French brand's newest scalp product - a purifying thermal mud mask - landed on my desk, I couldn't wait to compare it to my forever favourite.
Turns out, the Christophe Robin Purifying Mask with Thermal Mud is unlike any hair product I've tried - and I've tried it all.

What Is the Christophe Robin Purifying Mask?
You know how you can get mud masks for your face?
Christophe Robin Purifying Mask with Thermal Mud 250mL uses the same idea, but for your scalp and hair.
This detoxifying, pre-shampoo hair mask treatment contains spirulina and thermal blue mud high in sulphur to absorb oils and impurities from oily scalps.
Bonus: A red algae complex re-mineralises, smooths and softens dry ends at the same time.
Suitable for all hair types, textures and colours, the Christophe Robin hair mask also has a matching purifying shampoo.

Both of these Christophe Robin hair products are for the scalp, but how are they different - and do I need both?!
Don't make the mistake I did and use both the new mud mask and the cult scalp scrub in the one hair wash routine.
Rather, sub them in and out depending on what your hair and scalp need.
Here's the quick breakdown of what each scalp product does and when to use them:
- Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt 250ml - The original Christophe Robin scalp scrub is for oily or sensitive scalps.
- Use weekly as your 'first shampoo' on damp hair to mechanically exfoliate the scalp to remove build up, calm itchiness and regulate oily roots.
- Christophe Robin Purifying Mask with Thermal Mud 250mL - A new Christophe Robin hair mask that's a pre-wash treatment for stressed, oily scalps and dry ends.
- Rather than exfoliating like the scrub, the thermal mud mask draws impurities and product build up out of the scalp's pores, while also conditioning the hair and scalp.
How to Use Christophe Robin Purifying Mask with Thermal Mud.
Now, this bit's important, because the Christophe Robin Purifying Mask is a fairly confusing product to use.
There are actually two ways you can use this mask:
1. On dry hair before shampooing to give your scalp and hair an intense detox.
You'll need to use a generous amount of product (think a big scoop), applying on dry hair from your scalp through to your ends.
Leave in for 10-15 mins, then jump in the shower and shampoo out using Christophe Robin Purifying Shampoo with Thermal Mud 250mL or a deep clean shampoo before conditioning.

2. As an express 2-minute pre-shampoo scalp treatment.
Time poor friends, you can also apply this mask on damp hair for a few minutes.
You'll only need to use around a tablespoon of product, and focus on your scalp and roots rather than the ends.

I enjoy this mask a lot, but you should know...
It's a completely different product to my beloved Christophe Robin scalp scrub.
If you buy it expecting it to be similar - or use it in a similar way - you'll probably think it's meh like I did the first time I gave it a crack.
Firstly, the whipped mud-like texture is super smooth and light. It feels cool and fresh on the scalp, and doesn't foam at all.
I didn't read the instructions before wetting my hair in the shower, so my first impression of this mask was applied to damp hair like a shampoo.
Look, it was... alright.
But honestly, the way the smooth mud texture emulsified to a hydrating milk with zero lather left me confused.
It wasn't until I used it on dry hair as a leave-in treatment that I got the hype.
This is my preferred way to use the product because the two-in-one formula deals with my oily roots and dry ends at the same time.
Even before conditioning, my hair felt SO BLOODY SOFT after I shampooed the mask out.
My scalp felt so fresh and so clean.
I definitely don't need to shampoo twice when I use this mask.

Yes, it looks shiny and bouncy, but it's all about that soft, clean hair feeling.
Final Verdict...
So you might be wondering... will I be replacing my Christophe Robin scalp scrub with the new mud mask?
Nope. Wouldn't dream of it.
What I will be doing is alternating the two products in my hair wash routine.
Because in the words of the Old El Paso girl: Why not use (and love) both?
