If you’d asked me a few years ago whether I needed an eye cream, I would’ve rolled my eyes (pun definitely intended). I’ve been known to say that most eye creams are a waste of your hard earned cash.
I’ll also admit that I’ve been pretty lucky in the under-eye department, no major issues to speak of for most of my life. But then I went through menopause, and what came with it was a whole new kind of tired.
Suddenly, those little fine lines were not so little. And dark circles, well they set up camp and made themselves at home. What used to be a non-issue, smooth and firm, began to whisper “you might wanna do something about this.”
So when the team at Adore Beauty asked me to test out the new Viviology Retinal Eye Cream, I was a curious combo of both excited and skeptical. Excited, because the range was co-created by James Vivian who I adore (and wholeheartedly trust), happens to be one of Australia’s most trusted skin experts.

Still I was skeptical because retinal (known to be more potent than its retinol counterpart) sounded perhaps a little too powerful for my sensitive, over 50’s eyes.
At 52, almost 53 my skin is drier, thinner, more reactive and throws hissy fits (hmmm, a lot like me, not the thinner bit though ha!) I’ve flirted with retinoids before, but more often than not I’ve swiftly done a runner, as my skin can be sensitive and very reactive to powerful active ingredients.
So let’s get into what happened when I actually used Viviology’s Retinal Eye Cream.

What is Retinal?

For those not fluent in the skincare lingo, retinal (a.k.a. retinaldehyde) is like retinol’s more sophisticated older cousin. It’s closer to the active form of Vitamin A, retinoic acid that your skin can actually use, so you don’t need as much of it to see results. What this means for you, is that it’s faster-acting, and generally well tolerated despite its potency.
Still, I’ve always been a bit scared-y pants of retinol-based eye creams. But this one promised gentle, effective results, so I put it to the test.

Who Is Retinal Eye Cream Best For?

If you’re in your 40s, 50s or beyond and noticing changes like fine lines, puffiness, or that hollow, darkening tired look under the eyes this is worth a go. I’m not sure how it would work for those of you with genetic darkness. And if you have extremely sensitive skin - or eyes - I’d tread carefully.
If you’ve been scared of retinal or had bad experiences in the past, this one is your soft landing. It’s powerful but polite. Think of it like the perfect dinner guest: shows up with the goods, and doesn’t cause drama.

Viviology Retinal Eye Cream Review

Let’s start with the texture: it’s buttery but not too rich. It feels light like a silky-meets-cream hybrid. It melts into your skin and doesn’t just sit there like some heavier formulas I’ve tried.
While it’s allegedly safe for daytime use, I used it at night (as I still prefer a lightweight serum textured eye product under makeup during the day). The Viviology Retinal Eye Cream fit easily into my usual nighttime routine. I like to apply my eye cream after cleansing and misting, but before serums, face oil, moisturiser etc.
The packaging is very user-friendly, no fiddly jars or awkward pumps that spit out too much product. A tiny pea-sized amount was more than enough for both eyes.

The First Few Days: No irritation

This is where I braced myself for the backlash. Historically, my skin freaks out with retinol. Dryness, flaking, even a stinging / zinging sensation. But hand on heart none of that happened. I’m not exaggerating when I say zero irritation.
No redness. No flakiness. No morning regrets.
This is huge. Especially since the product includes 0.09% encapsulated retinal (a slow-release form that’s meant to be gentler), along with soothing goodies like shea butter and niacinamide. She is doing what she promises.

The Results

After just a few nights, I noticed my eyes looked… fresher. Not dramatically so (this isn’t Botox in a bottle), but noticeably less dark, definitely more hydrated.

By the end of week two the skin under my eyes felt smoother and firmer. The dark circles, which have become more prominent since menopause, looked a little less “sunken and exhausted” and more “I’ve taken a nap and maybe enjoyed a facial.”
I’m eager to continue and see just how much more my under-eye area can appear more alive.

Final Thoughts

I’ve used plenty in my time as a professional makeup artist and trusted beauty judge - everything from fancy department store brands to cult-fave French pharmacy picks. Some are lovely but expensive, others feel nice going on but don’t do much. Results are generally temporary (great for makeup artists) but not long term (not great for us girlies over 40!)
This one punches well above its weight.
Viviology Retinal Eye Cream is more affordable than many retinal-based eye products I’ve tried, and it actually delivers. It absorbs better than thicker creams, doesn’t interfere with the rest of my routine, and hasn’t once made my eyes feel tight, dry or irritated.
Would I repurchase? 100%. Has it earned a permanent spot in my routine? Absolutely.
If you're navigating the hormonal rollercoaster of perimenopause or post-menopause and finding your eyes are looking a little “tired,” this is a beautiful place to start.
